New Vision for the Bathroom

When Andrew and I browsed Avalon Carpet Tile and Flooring back in November, we left with visions of Carrara marble dancing in our heads.

But after stewing things over, I thought it might not be the best choice for us because:

  1. the high-maintenance factor. I mean, I’m barely motivated to clean as it is, so if we need a “special” cleaner for natural stone, well… that’d be a really convenient excuse not to clean.
  2. it’s heavy. Over Christmas, we visited our friends Tricia and Tom, who are renovating a bath in their Philadelphia townhouse. Of course, we wanted to pick their brains and learn from their experiences, and Tom mentioned that marble might require a reinforced subfloor and… yeah…
  3. it’s fancy. I’m not sure I’ve emphasized this enough, but our house is humble like Wilbur the pig. It’s not grand, it’s not chi-chi-chi-chi-chi, it may not be suited to a random room filled floor-to-ceiling with marble.

I was a little nervous to break the news to Andrew, but he’s so easy-going, he just said, “Ok, what do you want?”

Hmmm. Good question.

Enter pinterest.

This picture got me thinking dark floors:

Gorge, right? But Andrew and I really like a dark finish for the vanity. Would that look awful against dark flooring? People do it:

So we decided on dark floor, dark vanity base, and white subway tile for the walls. But after sleeping on THAT decision, I had a niggling feeling that it wasn’t right either. I wandered the tile displays at Lowes, browsed pinterest some more, and I think I found the one. The inspiration picture that sums it all up:

I visited Avalon’s website to see if I could find any pricing, and there was a banner touting “Sale on natural stone and ceramic tile. Lowest prices of the year!” I took it as a sign, and the deal was sealed.

We have decided on:

  • light hexagonal marble tile for the floor,
  • dark vanity base with (hopefully) a light marble top,
  • brushed nickel finishes,
  • white subway tile for the shower walls and
  • white subway tile halfway up the other walls, too.

Now we need to actually purchase some of this shizzle.

I’m getting nervous about ripping up our only full bathroom.

(If you’re on pinterest, here’s my bathroom board.)

Christmas 2011

Happy 2012, all! My sister, Stephanie, sent me some pictures from Christmas at the Dill household, so I’m sharing a couple.

What’d we get for Christmas? It was surprisingly Apple-y. Susiemommy is tricky.

Widget is still getting over his jealousy.

Speaking of Widge, we also tried to get a picture of the three fur kids together. Here’s my favorite:

Hope everyone had a healthy and joyous holiday season! We’re back to the grind here, but I’m not complaining because my grind now includes playing Words with Friends and Bejeweled on the iPad.
